Chimneys

Correct design and safe condition of a chimney is essential in order to gain the best from any working fire. It is important to remember that the fuel, be it wood, or gas, will usually burn in almost any situation, however the combustion of the fuel and safe discharge of the products of combustion requires careful consideration.

Many Householders with older properties consider having an open fire within a recess which has been enlarged to the full extent of the fireplace opening. Often there are problems of the fire smoking into the room, this may be due to draught-proofing, or the fact that the top of the chimney has been rebuilt smaller than the original and then the top of the chimney is the main restriction. It is possible to fit an electric fan to the top of the chimney in order to extract the smoke, however it is important to consider the aspects of noise, increased ventilation and the risk of an interruption to the power supply.

An alternative remedy to a chimney fan is to have a canopy or hood fitted. This will lower the effective size of the fireplace opening and ensure that the smoke is collected above the fire itself, thereby also reducing the ventilation effect.

A canopy is usually made to measure and fitted with a shut off valve, or damper which may be closed when the fire is not lit. A canopy will itself get hot when the fire is lit and this can double the heat output of the fire.

A Canopy

When wood or coal is fitted into a closed appliance the air flow up the chimney is considerably less than when an open fire was used. This can be as little as one twentieth of the flow rate. Under such conditions the flue gases remain in the chimney for twenty times as long with a tendency for condensation and deposition of any tar within the exhaust. If the chimney is fitted with a lining of the correct size then the gases will be quickly discharged avoiding any difficulties described.
