Stoves

It is essential to ensure that the stove is correctly installed for reasons of safety and efficiency. The hazards to avoid are:

  • Fume spillage, containing Carbon Monoxide; highly toxic, colourless and odourless
  • Soot and tar deposits
  • Chimney deterioration
  • Chimney fires

The stove must be sealed completely to the chimney and as most properties where stoves are fitted have no lined chimney it is necessary to install a flue lining. This is usually of the same diameter as the flue pipe leaving the stove and thus enables the flue to be swept easily and thoroughly, thereby avoiding the build up of deposits which can catch fire.

If the chimney is already lined as in a new home situation then there are special adapters manufactured to connect positively from the flue pipe to the clay liner in a way which will eliminate problems of condensation or tar spillage outside of the flue pipe.

There have been a number of advances in the design of stoves which has enabled appliances to burn with clean glass and minimum emissions of smoke and tar. The generic name is 'Cleanburn' stoves and these feature 'Airwash' which is essentially a secondary source of combustion air which is directed down the glass to keep the glass clear of condensation and guide the flames away from the front of the appliance. Additionally some stoves are fitted with a catalyst which gives a higher efficiency and even less deposits in the chimney.
